English 275: Introduction to Writing Studies

English 275: Introduction to Writing Studies introduces students to the broad field of writing. This class is taken by many different majors in their pursuit to be better writers.

In English 275 you learn about the threshold concepts of writing and write in four distinct genres. The first project requires you to reflect on your own personal life and figure out what your personal threshold concept is. The second paper has you explore your literary journey and what threshold concepts were most important in your life. The third paper has you explore a new genre that you are interested in and attempt to craft something that adheres to the genre standards as well as describing what those standards are. The fourth and final paper has you analysis scholarly articles pertaining to a self selected genre and do a deep dive into what makes that genre distinct.

I took English 275 my fall semester of Sophomore year under the instruction of Dr. Holly Hassel at North Dakota State University. She helped me hone my writing skills in unfamiliar genres and showed me I have a lot more to learn
