The Beer

In 2017, I began my first year at North Dakota State University and I was terrified. I went there thinking that I would be a Computer Science major and spend the majority of my life sitting at a computer typing lines of code. While I do technically sit at a computer for most of the day, I do not type lines of code. For that, I am thankful to my Intro to Creative Writing class that I took Freshman year as it showed me that my true passion lied in telling stories, something that my dad had tried to get across countless times.

In that class I was tasked with writing a short story. I chose to write a story called The Beer which told the story of a man drinking alone at a bar. As he drinks one drink after another, he reflects on the events that led him to that bar. The story looks into his mind as he thinks about his apartment, a fight, and the sadness that looms in the air.

On a whim, I submitted the story to the NDSU W-Challenge. To my surprise, it took home the 2nd place award in the fiction category, which helped to cement that I was on the right path. Since then,. I have shown no signs of stopping and I changed my major to English and Journalism, a far cry from Computer Science. If it does not display, you can always click the download button.
